The Hayward Gallery will open with a display of Gursky’s works, after being shut for over two years. The refurbished gallery has new pyramid roof lights, allowing natural light in the Brutalist building, at London’s South Bank, which originally opened in 1968.
The photographer is known for his large-scale work, but some of his new pieces show experimentation with camera phone-technology.
The show displays 68 of Gursky’s retrospective works, with the first one dating back to the 1980s. The contemporary art gallery said that the photographs range from an Amazon distribution centre to a stock exchange, “providing a sweeping visual record of our age”.
Hayward Gallery’s director Ralph Rugoff said: “A true innovator engaged in thinking about and picturing the times in which we live in, Gursky is the perfect artist for launching the 50th anniversary year of the Hayward.”
The exhibition opens today and will run until April 22nd.
