Enfield’s Talkies Community Cinema, a volunteered based cinema, is to screen films at Waterhouse Hall Theatre in Compton Road in the borough of Haringey. The venue will screen films about five times this year.
David Williamson, founder of Talkies Community Cinema said: “We have been searching for the best venues for community cinema and are really pleased to open in Winchmore Hill.”
“Waterhouse Hall Theatre has a fine drama tradition with The Compton Players and now the movie-theatre will add to the cultural mix in the area”.
Talkies’ first film offering is ‘A United Kingdom’, which will be screened this Saturday, the 10th of February. Later in the month it will show Matthew Bourne’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’. The film venue has currently organised screenings until the end of August.

Referring to the opening of the new community venue she has said ‘Forget the multiples charm of popcorn chomping in your ear and the disturbing glare of a mobile phone.’
The not-for-profit volunteer led cinema is set to be reminiscent of old movie theatres due to its focus on both the films and the ambience. Due to its charitable status, the community cinema is appealing for volunteers to help with marketing, organisation, artwork, events and programming.
Talkies is partnering with ‘Short Sighted Cinema’ once again to commission four filmmakers to produce a short film that will be set in Palmers Green, North London. Film makers will each be awarded £500 towards the cost of their film. The project is open to all genres of filmmaking. Previous winners have published a wide range of stories from romantic to gritty, featuring commuter secrets, alien abduction, immigration and smear tests.
