Actress and singer, Susanna Marie, known as SuRie has been chosen by a 50/50 combination of public and jury vote to represent the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest, which will be held in Lisbon in May 2018.

SuRie was crowned winner of Eurovision: You Decide, the British competition that decided who would represent the country in the European contest. The final was broadcast live from Brighton Dome, the site of ABBA’s 1974 Eurovision Song Contest win with Waterloo.

After the results were announced SuRie told host Mel Giedroyc that she would celebrate with “a bottle of something bubbly and a straw”.

SuRie is no stranger to the contest. She has appeared as a backing singer for Loïc Nottet in 2015 and also Blanche at Eurovision 2017.The singer has also sang in Jazz lounges throughout London and performed backing vocals for artists such as Chris Martin and Will Young. 

With classical roots in piano, voice and oboe, SuRie’s musical career started early as a child soloist, performing for the likes of HRH Prince Charles in iconic British venues such as The Royal Albert Hall and St. Paul’s Cathedral and at venues all around the world, including St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice. The Royal Academy of Music graduate started writing songs when she was 12 years old.
The United Kingdom made its Eurovision Song Contest debut in 1957. The country has won the Eurovision Song Contest five times and finished second a record number of 15 times. The UK has made it to top three on 23 occasions.
In recent years the UK hasn’t done so well in the Eurovision Song Contest, having finished in the bottom five several times in the past decade. 
The talented SuRie gives the UK a new sense of hope for being victorious in the competition.
