Daniel Kaluuya accepts Rising Star award at the BAFTAs.

Daniel Kaluuya is nominated for an Academy Award for his breakthrough role in Get Out.

Mr Kaluuya has thanked Islington’s Anna Scher Theatre School and Camden’s Weekend Arts College for supporting him at a grassroots level.

He also mentioned these arts centres in his winning speech at this year’s BAFTA awards.

His nomination will make him the fourth black Londoner to be nominated for an Oscar in as many years. Kaluuya will be competing against the likes of Gary Oldman and Daniel Day-Lewis for Best Actor.

Kaluuya: Rising Star

Gary Oldman won the Best Actor prize at the BAFTAs. But Mr Kaluuya was named the academy’s Rising Star, the only award which is decided by a public vote.

Mr Kaluuya, 28, said from the stage at the Royal Albert Hall:

“I am a product of arts funding within the UK. I’d like to thank people who financially support that, obviously in the mainstream arts but also at a grass roots level.”

The actor grew up on the Camelot House estate near Camden Town and went onto score a role in the challenging TV series Skins. He has also appeared in Black Mirror, and the films Sicario and Kick-Ass 2.

Meanwhile, the striking horror film Get Out been nominated for the Best Picture award at the Oscars.

The Academy Award’s 90th ceremony takes place In Hollywood on Sunday night.
