Two of London’s theatres have been added to the Theatres at Risk list, meaning they’re under threat of demolition.
North London’s Tottenham Palace Theatre and The Intimate Theatre are the new additions to the list. The list is monitored by the Theatres Trust.
The Intimate Theatre has hosted performers such as David Bowie and Richard Attenborough.
Both Theatre buildings are used as places of worship. However, their owners cannot afford the upkeep and their facades are deteriorating.
Claire Huckerbee, Architecture Advisor at the Theatres Trust, said: “There is a big local economic impact of theatres.
“They create jobs, they bring tourists and they support the local culture of each community.”
The Theatres Trust create the #TheatresAtRisk register to raise awareness of the theatres that are in desperate need of funding.
One success story is that of the Alexandra Palace Theatre, which has recently opened after being derelict for 80 years.
Although the renovation needed an £80 million fund from the National Lottery, and a £6 million grant from Haringey Council, the theatre is finally open to the public.
The redevelopment has kept original features such as the plaster and brick walls, which gives it an authentic and rustic feel.
Speaking at the opening of the theatre, MP Michael Ellis, the Minister for Art, said:
“We know many of the theatres on the list are experiencing financial problems.
The cultural and creative industries make a vast contribution to our economy, and the Government is committed to supporting their growth.”
While Alexandra Palace Theatre is no longer officially at risk, the register of theatres keeps on growing. Particularly in London.
