Narrow Way is now a source of contention between the council and local businesses

Hackney’s Mare Street has long been the Borough’s retail hub.
Through its efforts to pedestrianise the north end of Mare Street, The Narrow Way, Hackney Council aimed to create a more ‘attractive, social, accessible and functional’ space for shoppers, benefitting both residents and businesses.
They hoped to ‘revitalise the high street’ and make it more family friendly.
But independant shop owners on the Narrow Way told City New’s Marnie Gill that the project has actually been having a negative impact on local businesses.
The move from a busy bus lane to a pedestrianised street has meant less profit. Hanif Shaikh, a shop owner, said he feared his shop wouldn’t be there in a few years.
