Whilst gyms remain closed, many fitness instructors are looking to video calls to conduct online classes

As indoor gyms remain closed, Londoners turn to fitness classes on  Zoom to keep up their mental and physical wellbeing.

Health and fitness apps have seen a surge in downloads during lockdown and there has also been a big increase in the popularity of Zoom fitness classes.

Business intelligence analysts at App Annie have reported a 70% growth in the number of hours spent on health and fitness apps in the UK since December 2019.

Vincent Merouze is a dance fitness teacher based in London, who has transferred his previously gym-based classes to Zoom.

“Once the coronavirus hit I lost all my jobs in the space of 48 hours so that was stressful. But from that, there was an overwhelming response of people reaching out for online classes.

Vincent believes that his fitness classes and other online tutorials help his clients to relieve some of the anxiety felt by many during lockdown.

“[The classes are] incredibly important because you are able to just shake off the stress, especially during classes like dance cardio, you’re going to dance it out and sweat it out… all in your bedroom and PJs.”

Vincent’s classes are not just stress-relieving, they are also bringing people together and cutting through social distances in the digital world.

“I’ve got a person who has invited her mum to participate and they live in different countries. So it can be really magical to watch and see them interact with each other.

“Everyone wants to feel community and be a part of a tribe, and even if you can’t hug someone you can still belong.”
