Cook for Syria, a month-long campaign focused around Syrian cuisine is hoping to raise money and awareness of UNICEF’s Syria Relief.
The initiative hopes to encourage everyone, from the UK’s top chefs to people at home, to cook Syrian delicacies and classic dishes with a Syrian twist.
Events around North London will hold cook-outs around a Syrian theme, with panelists tasting and judging the dishes. The original idea had begun as a gala dinner, to raise money through food. It has since grown massively in popularity with various local restaurants getting involved.
Now, 60 restaurants have signed up to put Syrian-inspired food on their menus and to donate part of the revenue created by these dishes. The money raised will be going to UNICEF’s Syria Relief fund through Next Generation London.
Pizza Pilgrims on Exmouth Market is one of the restaurants involved, contributing a portion of their profits from their Syrian pizza. The unique creation, topped with spiced beef, Za’tar yoghurt and chilli hopes to raise both funds and awareness for the situation in Syria.
An event named “Your Main Cause” held at Club Zetter in Clerkenwell later tonight will see the founder of Cook for Syria, Serene Guen discuss the importance of the initiative. Ms. Guen has already explained to City News that, “food can now be a powerful vehicle to drive political change.”
