The Chancellor of the University of London, Her Royal Highness Princess Anne officially opened the University’s new halls of residents.
But the opening was marred by student protests.
Princess Anne arrived to announce the new Garden Halls. The accommodation which cost £140 million to refurbish and has been under construction for three years, offers 1,200 purpose built rooms to house students from a number of London’s institutions.
However the events were marred by student protests about the rise in rent. City News spoke to Lionel, a student who carried a sign adorned ‘Royal’s don’t pay rent’ and who stormed the conference hall just after Princess Anne had left.
Lionel said “Royals don’t pay rent, we are having a rent strike in solidarity with the British monarch, they never had to pay rent and neither should we” as he stood outside the halls in Islington.
