You may have heard of gender-equality campaign HeForShe following the fierce advocacy of actress Emma Watson. However, its profile in the capital is about to get that bit higher after HeForShe Arts Week arrived in London for the first time – and Islington is more than on board.
With Islington already ranked as one of the top 100 areas in the UK for gender equality at work, and proven by the charity Stonewall to have been involved in providing equal gender opportunities, Islington pub The King’s Head is hosting NotFlix tonight.
The comedy group uses a mixture of jokes and music to engage women and men in a more inclusive and entertaining way.
The King’s Head is hot on the tails of fellow Islington venue Sadlers Wells, which yesterday held a panel in which key figures from the British arts world gathered to discuss how culture shapes our understanding of gender.
Speakers included Laura Haynes, Chair of UN Women UK, Rufus Norris, Artistic Director of the National Theatre, Tamara Rojo, Lead Principal and Artistic Director of English National Ballet, and Alistair Spalding, Sadler’s Wells’ Artistic Director and Chief Executive.
Both events are part of a wider arts week from 8th to 15th March, organised by the UN Women’s Department and dedicated to gender equality, the empowerment of women and raising awareness to create a gender-equal world.
Art gives us a license to experience something new—to express ourselves openly & to question our culture—@EmmaWatson https://t.co/aQsbMKV5AF pic.twitter.com/zq68CSxN7u
