Narrowing pupil attainment gaps suggest school reform policies are working
SHARE:
The league tables assess schools on a range of measures including attainment results for students at the end of key stage 4, the progress made by pupils between the end of primary school, to the end of secondary school.
Top performing boroughs for progressing pupils include Merton, Brent, Barnet, with Westminster and Harrow in joint fourth. Harris Academy Merton achieved the highest score, showing its pupils had a much higher level of progress in English, Maths, 3 English Baccalaureate qualifications and 3 other approved qualifications compared to their peers across England.
Other areas of success include the narrowing attainment gap between the most disadvantaged pupils and their peers which has narrowed by 10% from 2011 and 3.2% since last year.
School Standards Minister Nick Gibb said closing this gap is indicative of the success of government policies, including the increasing uptake of core academic subjects amongst disadvantaged pupils.
“Academic standards are rising in our schools thanks to our reforms and the hard work of teachers, with 1.9 million more children in good or outstanding schools than in 2010. Today’s results reinforce this success, with teachers and pupils responding well to the new more rigorous curriculum introduced by this Government.”
