The families of four soldiers killed in the 1982 IRA bombings have had their request for legal aid granted.

Alleged bomber John Downey, 66, could now face High Court action as family members of the victims seek justice.

A criminal trial against Mr Downey collapsed in 2014 after he was mistakenly sent a letter assuring him of his freedom from prosecution.  Judges then concluded it was an abuse of executive power to proceed.

The Sun reported that the Legal Aid Agency previously refused to fund further legal action a total of five times.

Mr Downey maintains his innocence, but the families warmly welcomed the announcement and hope that it will help in their fight for justice.
