The BBC has announced that Clare Balding will be the lead presenter for Wimbledon 2023.

Balding will replace Barker, who announced her retirement last year after covering the tournament for 30 years.

Balding said: “It’s a huge honour to be given this responsibility but I am very aware that no one person can fill Sue’s shoes.”

In addition, she added: “This will always be a team effort and we’re lucky that the BBC line-up includes former professionals with huge insight as well as wonderful reporters and commentators.”

The 52-year-old has presented the Today At Wimbledon highlights segment since 2015.

She has also won awards for her coverage of the Olympics and Paralympic games.

Barker let it slip that Balding was going to take over at the BT Sport Action Woman Awards last November.

She said: “I know I’m leaving it in the safest hands, it’s absolutely wonderful to leave it with Clare.”

Barker’s career was celebrated by the tennis greats in a lifetime achievement award.

The 66-year-old won the 1976 French Open and reached No 3 in the world as a player before making the switch to broadcasting.

Former cricketer Isa Guha was also tipped to be to be in the running but instead will have a significant role in the 2023 coverage by welcoming viewers to the start of each day like she did last year.

Wimbledon begins on 3 July 2023.
