Chelsea coach, Emma Hayes, has said a penalty that occurred offside combined with a disallowed last play stole a “3-1 win” against Real Madrid.
The match didn’t begin in Chelsea’s favour, with a goal from Real Madrid’s Olga Carmona in the 9th minute. But the Blues maintained a persistent attack, with more than 21 attempts at goal around the 90 minutes and a possession of 58%
After a perfect pass by Ashley Lawrence, Niamh Charles scored an equalising header just before the end of the first half.
In the second half, Charles returned the favour, delivering another pass to the heart of the area, which Sam Kerr delivered to the goal. Giving the advantage to the London team.
Everything changed in the 77th minute, when Chelsea’s midfielder, Fleming tackled Athenea, who stumbled resulting in a penalty. The Chelsea coach believes Athenea was out of the area.
Without VAR, the Chelsea goalkeeper Berger faced Olga Carmona’s penalty, resulting in the goal that returned the score to a 2-2 draw.
Five minutes into the additional time, Charles tried to score, which was eliminated since it was offside according to the referee.
Emma Hayes, expressed her dissatisfaction, and highlighted what she believes she saw in the repetition. She said: “It is embarrassing. I had to check why it was disallowed. Was it Niamh? No. Was it Sam (Kerr) interfering with the goalkeeper? She was about seven yards away, no way near the keeper”.
