Gas Works in Farringdon

Commuters are claiming gas works in Farringdon are causing chaos. They are saying their journeys are being disrupted and impeded by the works, which started last month. Additionally, there are fears concerning road safety following two recent accidents.

One passenger who has to make the journey to Farringdon everyday calls the disruption a “nightmare”, due to grid-locked cars in traffic. Another said it is “not very safe for cyclists,” stating he has started to walk into work instead.

A further commuter has complained of her journey being made unsafe by diversions. She says that she has to “get off the bus early and walk through unsafe roads.” This is because her bus route has been shortened. “(Walking) takes longer, it is not safe, it’s extremely dark. I’ve witnessed people’s phones getting stolen. I’m not safe and there’s nothing I can do about it, because that is the only journey that I can take. I would like to know how long this is going to take. I don’t like it, it’s not safe for me or other people.”

Road safety in Farringdon: an ongoing issue

Two road incidents occurred near Farringdon earlier this month. One involved a crash with a police vehicle where a pedestrian was injured. Therefore, people are worried about the care Cadent Gas, the company commissioned for the works, have for safety. Farringdon is home to places such as Fabric nightclub and Smithfield market.

The media relations manager for Cadent Gas, Stephanie van Rosse said “In that area we have had problems, because people are ignoring the traffic management. We’ve adapted and changed it but people are ignoring the red lights.”

With the works having no set end date, commuters are hoping that the new year will bring no new disruption with it.
