West Ham will be group winners if they can avoid defeat against Freiburg at the London Stadium tonight at 8pm on matchday five of the Europa League.
West Ham will also be group winners with a draw.
If this happens, they will not have to play an extra fixture with one of the sides who dropped out of the Champions League earlier this week.
The reverse fixture in October saw West Ham narrowly beat 2-1 by the German side with goals from Paqueta and Aguerd.
The Hammers come into the game following a 5-0 loss to Fulham on Sunday. This was the heaviest defeat since David Moyes took over as a manager in November 2017.
West Ham are hoping to build on last year’s European success. The East-London side beat Florentina 2-1 in the UEFA Europa Conference League final in June, subsequently qualifying for the Europa League.
The UEFA Europa League founded in 1971 and was previously known as the UEFA Cup.
It is the second-tier competition ranking below the UEFA Champions League. Current Champions are Sevilla who have won the competition a record seven times.
The last London team to win the title was Chelsea back in 2019.
