Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has come under attack from Conservative MPs for ‘financial mismanagement’, ‘pre-election giveaways’ and ‘pleading poverty’.
Penny Mordaunt PC, Leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Council backed calls for a debate over Mr Khan’s spending plans.
Ms Mordaunt read out a list of spending commitments apparently made by Mr Khan in the House of Commons. These notably included £1m for “free advertising on lingerie and vaginal moisturiser'” £30m for unions to prevent Tube strikes and “£5,000 of taxpayers” cash for Transport for London’s staff’s junk food’.
This echoed earlier accusations from Louie French, Tory MP for Old Bexley and Sidcup that Mr Khan had now found “£500 million behind his sofa for pre-election giveaways” and called for an audit of the situation.
“The Leader of the House will be aware that, despite being bailed out with over £6 billion by the Government, the Mayor of London has continued to plead poverty at every opportunity and seeks to deflect blame to the Government for his many appalling failures to both keep Londoners safe and London moving over the past eight years.”
Louis French, Tory MP for Old Bexley and Sidcup
Mr Khan is seeking a third term in City Hall at the Mayoral Election due to be held on 2 May 2024.
His Conservative opponent Susan Hall accused the current Mayor of “squirrelling away” money . She believes he is aiming to fund a pre-election giveaway, such as offers of a second year of free school meals for older primary school pupils and a freeze of Transport for London (TfL) fares.
The Mayor’s spending record was highlighted by City Hall Tories in a recent report entitled The State of London’s Health Inequalities. The report offered suggestions for new policies to improve health in deprived areas.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan is yet to respond to the accusations.
