The UK's first hangar for cargo and adapted bikes is unveiled in Westminster.

Westminster City Council has installed the first bike storage hangar which is able to store adapted and cargo bikes.

To celebrate, locals went on a bike ride which ended with the unveiling of the new hangar.

A hangar is a storage space for bicycles. Until now, there has been no hangar designed for cargo and adapted bikes. These types of bicycles are much bigger and require more space than conventional bikes.

Local residents, families, cyclists, disabled cyclists and even a cat gathered at Westminster Wheels in Church street. They then cycled to the hangar’s location outside St John’s Wood adventure playground.

A large number of cyclists and people moving down a street.
Cyclists and those from the community gathered to celebrate the occasion.

‘Wheels for Wellbeing’

Wheels for Wellbeing‘, a charity that has become the UK wide campaigning voice for disabled cyclists, attended the event.

The entity organises regular cycle rides, catering for a range of disabilities and providing different adapted bikes to fit anyone’s needs.

The disabled cyclists involved described how the regular rides have provided them with a support group and has reduced their loneliness. Also, how not having a hangar able to store their bikes was a real challenge.

A number of disabled cyclists and others stand or sit on their bikes, facing a parking lot.
Disabled cyclists also benefit from the hangar’s construction.

The director of ‘Wheels for Wellbeing,’ Isabelle Clement, who is a disabled cyclist, said she hopes this new hangar will be the first of many:

“I hope this hangar will start off a trend and encourage other boroughs and the rest of the UK to install a hangar fit for adapted bicycles. It is necessary disabled cyclists are afforded the same right as other cyclists”.
