Action Planning for Palestine: Key insights unveiled
On January 31st, the Archway Methodist Church hosted the “End the War on Gaza Free Palestine Organising Assembly”, a crucial platform discussing action plans for Palestine.
The event in North London was organised by the “Islington Palestine Solidarity” in collaboration with “Stop the War Coalition.”
Featuring prominent speakers including Jeremy Corbyn, MP for Islington North; Ronnie Kasrils, former ANC Minister; Sophia Beach, Jewish anti-Zionist activist; and Lindsey German, Convener of Stop the War Coalition.
During the assembly Corbyn shared sobering statistics, noting an estimated 37,000 casualties, and 9,000 bodies found in the Gaza rubble. He stressed the need for immediate political action, claiming, “If we went to the funeral of every child killed in Gaza since October 7th, it would take 27 years to cover the total number.”
Corbyn criticised a perceived colonial mindset in parliamentary discussion, opposing calls for external governance in Gaza, including the appointment of a governor and government.
He urged instead to “build solidarity with the Palestinian people so they can decide their own future.” Rejecting the notion of external interference in Palestinian self-determination.
Corbyn, frustrated with parliamentary responses, acknowledged the influence of street-level activism, thanking global voices advocating for a ceasefire.
The MP highlighted the dire conditions in Gaza, with a million people lacking basic necessities like food, water, and medicine.
He expressed concern about upcoming warm months, fearing a cholera outbreak from inadequate sanitation. Additionally, mentioning the attacks in the West Bank, intensifying the humanitarian crisis.
The assembly functioned as an informative platform, highlighting the pressing call for political appeals and international solidarity.
