MP Apsana Begum has raised her voice against the extended delay in the Labour Party’s investigation into her case, expressing frustration over the lack of communication and transparency.
In 2022, she called for a duty of care to be placed on political parties and employers to ensure survivors of domestic abuse are not exposed to further harassment.
The Labour MP, who has been engaged in the party’s process for over two and a half years, said she has not received the final outcome and has not been informed of the reasons for delay.
The ordeal focused on providing extensive personal information and participating in a week-long hearing, during which she gave virtual evidence in the presence of her ex-husband.
Begum shared her distress, saying the lengthy process has impacted her mental health.
In a statement, Begum expressed concerns about the Labour Party’s ability to appropriately address domestic abuse issues, emphasising her duty to fellow survivors.
She revealed receiving support from women across the UK, who shared similar worries about the party’s complaints procedure.
The MP also criticised what she perceived as undemocratic and unjust treatment. Citing a challenging trial in 2021, and an allegedly illegitimate process in 2022 conducted during her sick leave.
Begum has had to contend with heightened Islamophobic abuse, death threats, and concerns for her safety.
Pointing to the Forde Report’s unresolved issues regarding the treatment of Black and Asian individuals within the Labour Party; Begum called for an end to the mistreatment she perceives as a survivor of domestic abuse and the UK’s first and only hijab-wearing MP.
