The reaction to the appointment of new Sutton United Women’s manager Lucy Clark is ‘frustrating’, according to football analyst Matt Hayes.
Clark became the first ever transgender manager in the top five flights of English football earlier this month.
Clark was forced to make her social media accounts private after receiving transphobic abuse online. Sutton United Women also turned the comments off their X account.
City News spoke with Opta analyst and LGBTQ+ activist Matt Hayes about the reaction on social media.
“People assume the news is aimed at them when its not” said Hayes, and that the abuse distracted from the ‘importance of representation…for vulnerable LGBTQ+ people… Seeing one person like Lucy Clark that you can relate to can be inspiring. If Lucy Clark can do it, why can’t you?”
