Cristian Romero has received four red cards and 28 yellow cards in his 83 appearances for Spurs. But the defender says he believes his discipline has already improved in 2024.
Romero, who has been captaining Spurs in the absence of Heung-min Son, says he is making an effort to pick up fewer cards.
Romero said “I know it is an aspect of my game I need to work on and polish up a bit and improve.
“I was aware that I was picking up too many cards so I set out to work on it.
“Maybe it is down to my style of play, on many occasions protesting too much for clashing with someone, so in situations like this I think I’ve improved a great deal.”
His last red card, in the 4-1 loss against Chelsea in November, resulted in a three-game suspension in which Spurs failed to win any of the games he missed.
Romero has scored three times for Spurs in the Premier League this season.
In an interview with Sky Sports, he said he’s the happiest he’s been since joining the club.
“This season the club have made some quite important changes which I think have helped to connect us to the supporters, as well as helping to grow and improve the club and by continuing with those important changes we can aim to achieve even greater things”.
Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou addressed Romero’s tackling at the end of last year, saying he needs to be mindful of the spotlight on his playing style.
