Jewish charity revealed antisemitic incidents have risen by 161% in the last year
A charity that protects the Jewish community in the UK has revealed in a report that antisemitic incidents have risen significantly since the October 7 attacks, with the majority in London.
Greater London reported the highest number of incidents, with 2,410 in 2023. This is over four times more than Greater Manchester, which reported 555 incidents – the second highest number.
Barnet, which has the largest Jewish population in the city, recorded 864 incidents. Westminster had the second highest total incidents. It was the location of several anti-Israel demonstrations since the start of the war between Israel and Gaza.
Throughout the UK, and London, incidents surged after the Hamas gunmen killed about 1,200 people in Southern Israel and took 253 hostage on October 7.
The Israeli military subsequently launched a campaign in Gaza, since which the Hamas-run health ministry says more than 28,500 people have been killed.
CST Chief Executive Mark Gardner said “British Jews are strong and resilient, but the explosion of hatred against our community is an absolute disgrace.”
Home Secretary, James Cleverly MP, said “The rise in antisemitic hatred and abuse we have seen in the UK in recent months is utterly deplorable. We’ve taken strong steps to confront this head on”.
Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper described the “appalling and intolerable rise in antisemitism” over recent months as “a stain on our society”. She said “we must never relent in our work to root it out.”
