On GB News, the Ashfield MP said the first Muslim London mayor Mr Khan had “given our capital city away to his mates.”
After refusing to apologise, the former Conservative deputy chairman was suspended from the party.
A day after the comments were made, a hate comment report was received by the force.
The police say “officers are assessing this report.” But did not provide information on named individuals.
Sadiq Khan is urging the Prime Minister to call the remarks racist and Islamophobic.
In an interview with the Evening Standard, he said Mr Anderson had “poured petrol on the fires of hatred.”
Shadow Commons Leader Lucy Powell said “when we see racism, antisemitism, or Islamophobia in our own ranks, we must take action”.
Senior Conservatives have described his comments as “wrong”
Since making the comments, Mr Anderson says his comments were “clumsy” but apologising would be a “sign of weakness.”
In an article he wrote for Express newspaper, he said he was not racist but was expressing fears over “extremists who hide under the Islam banner.”
Leader of the Commons, Penny Mordaunt, said the article was the “closest we will get to an apology” and urged Mr Anderson to “consider all the good” he could do with his position.
Some Conservatives have supported Mr Anderson. Jacob Rees-Mogg said the comments were “infelicitous” but his “concerns about Islamism are entirely legitimate.”
The assessment could result in a full investigation, or dismissed if there is lack of evidence.
Mr Anderson has not ruled out standing for Reform, formerly known as the Brexit Party at the next general election.
