The London Policing Board are meeting to discuss the progress made since Baroness Louise Casey’s report revealed the Met’s culture was institutionally racist, homophobic, misogynistic and toxic.
The Metropolitan Police appointed Baroness Casey to lead the independent review. This was after the kidnap, rape and murder of Sarah Everard by serving Met officer, Wayne Couzins.
Repeated failures
Following the independent review, a Dame Elish Angiolini published a report. It showed Couzins had a history of sexual offences dating back to 1995. He was never arrested or prosecuted and became an armed officer with the Civil Nuclear Constabulary and the Met.
According to Dame Elish. there were “lamentable and repeated failure [s]” to investigate allegations reported to police before Sarah Everard’s murder in March 2021.
Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, said he was shocked at the findings and that the Met “must urgently make changes to earn trust back”.
Response from the Met
Sir Mark Rowley, the Met Commissioner, says, “The majority of my Met colleagues share my determination to reform, by both confronting the risk posed by predatory men in policing, and also, improving our protection of women and children across London.”
The London Policing Board meeting is still ongoing. Outcomes of the meeting will be made available later today.
