A London hospital has hosted a charity abseil to raise funds for its children’s wards after staff said NHS funding restraints leave it with “outdated” facilities.

St George’s Charity Hospital organised the abseil down the side of the Pelican Hotel, which looks after discharged patients, to raise funds to improve its facilities.

The abseil raised over £2,000 for the Time For A Change appeal which was set up earlier this year by the charity which aims to raise £5m for St George’s by the end of 2024.

According to the charity, the money raised will go towards “expanding the paediatric intensive care unit by a third […] transforming the wards into bright and welcoming spaces and […] creating better facilities for our staff who work so tirelessly”.

Charity Organiser Helen Butterfield said: “We’re one of the largest providers of children’s services in the country, but while our care is excellent, our facilities are not up to the standard that we’d like.”

‘Outdated’ children’s wards

Despite being one of the busiest hospitals in the UK and treating over 130,000 children each year, the facilities at present do not match the care that is provided by the doctors and nurses.

The lack of space in the paediatric wards has seen waiting times for critical treatment increase to nearly 100 children per month.

The children’s ward in St George’s is over 20 years old and has not been modernised in that period.

A nurse who works on the children’s ward at St George’s told City News: “Being in one of the biggest hospitals in the UK and having outdated hospital wards, it doesn’t match up.

“We want to give a high standard of treatment and care to patients but not in possibly the most outdated of units to work in… We need adequate facilities.”

The staff working at the hospital stressed the need for better lunch spaces, family support rooms and showers.

City News has approached St George’s Hospital Trust Board for comment about the hospital’s financial difficulties, but they have not responded.
