Elianne Andam was stabbed in Croydon on 27 September 2023 on her way to school.
The 17-year-old defendant, who cannot be named due to his age, appeared at the Old Bailey by video link on Thursday morning.
The defendant pleaded not guilty of murder, and instead admitted manslaughter. He also denies carrying a blade in a public space.
The plea was not accepted by prosecutors and another trial will occur on 25 November, also at the Old Bailey.
The defendant was arrested at 09:45 BST on the day of the attack, which allegedly took place at approximately 08:30 BST.
Eyewitnesses described the attacker as stabbing the victim repeatedly and fleeing from the scene. He was claimed to be masked and wearing gloves.
Witnesses say a bus driver and passers-by attempted to save her.
Prosecutor Alison Morgan KC previously said: “It was, the prosecution allege, a brutal attack.”
