It will not only teach breakdancing but will also encourage students to explore the social and economic infrastructure of the communities where it was born.
The Academy Breakin’ Convention (ABC) will also cover topics such as music production, popping (a genre of dance), and even graffiti.
ABC started life as an educational performance called ‘Breakin’ Convention’, which aimed to bring international Hip Hop to life on the big stage.
Its director, Jonzi D, told City News that the progression from show to school always felt natural. The chance to teach, he went on, was something he always dreamed of doing.
City News also caught up with one of the dance instructors on the course. Arran Green says he his excited by the uniqueness of ABC. He says it is much broader than anything else in the world.
“Most of the time you pick one element you like in Hip-Hop but this time students will learn them all and see how they connect.”
Arran thinks that exposure to the world of Hip Hop is the best way to understand it. The course, he added, will be worth much more than just the piece of paper at the end.
“The qualifications get you in the door but what you learn being a Hip Hop practitioner is what makes you stand out when you get in that room”.
Sadler’s Wells theatre are building a brand new venue in East London, that will host the two-year course from later this year.
The ABC degree is not Hip hop’s or break-dancing’s only big first in 2024. Paris 2024 will see the debut of ‘breaking’ as an Olympic event. The Olympic website describes the event as ‘emerging from hip hop culture’.
