London fire commissioner Andy Roe has warned that a fire on the scale of the Grenfell Tower blaze could happen again.
He said over 1000 buildings in the capital have “very serious deficiencies”, including some still being clad in the polyethylene material that helped the Grenfell fire spread so quickly.
The Grenfell Tower fire killed 72 Londoners, injuring 70 more, in June 2017.
The commissioner’s comments came after the publication of Phase 1 of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry. The inquiry aims ‘to examine the circumstances leading up to and surrounding the fire’.
Some, including Justice4Grenfell campaigner Joe Delaney, argue that the number of residential buildings in London with dangerous cladding is actually over 2,000.
London Fire Brigade’s response would be “so different today”
Andy Roe did praise improvements made by London Fire Brigade, after the inquiry found that it had completed all fourteen of the recommendations made to it. The commissioner described the achievement as a “very significant milestone” which has made ‘Hundreds of thousands of Londoners” safer.
As a result of the changes made by the Fire Brigade, he emphasised that a response to an emergency like that of the 2017, would be “so different” today.
What has the Government said?
The Government has completed 11 out of the 15 recommendations they received from the inquiry.
A Home Office spokesperson said the government remains “wholly committed to putting measures in place to ensure a tragedy like the Grenfell Tower fire never happens again”.
“We are also currently considering responses to our consultation on personal evacuation plans to determine how best to deliver against the inquiry’s recommendations. A government response to that consultation will be published in due course.”
