A ‘family-friendly’ parade will celebrate the borough’s diverse communities and creative talents that
The carnival was held online in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and then cancelled in 2022 as a mark of respect to the death of the late Majesty the Queen.
Last year, Hackney Council said that due to “rising costs and challenging inflationary pressures” the carnival will take place in 2024 and will be a biennial event.
The budget almost doubled each year “due to its increasing scale and popularity”, but they planned to work with the “carnival groups and wider cultural and hospitality sectors on a reduced programme to keep Hackney’s carnival traditions alive” while they prepared for a full carnival event in 2024.
This is a commitment the Council is making to ensure both residents and visitors to the borough can continue to enjoy Hackney’s culture and creativity.
Artistic director Pax Nindi plans to lead the street parade that will include floats and Hackney’s legacy carnival groups “that residents know and love”.
Mr Nindi commented that: “Hackney Carnival holds a special place in my heart, and I’m delighted to be at the helm once more.
“The overwhelming community support is a testament to the carnival’s significance in our lives. 2019 was a triumph, and 2024 promises to be an explosion of colour, culture, and togetherness.
“Hackney Carnival is for everyone, transcending boundaries of colour, race, and creed, and I’m honoured to be leading the way working with our amazing carnival groups.”
The family-focus emphasis follows the Cabinet Member for Culture Cllr Chris Kennedy comments on safety fears as he discussed this year’s carnival route.
Around 100,000 people attended the carnival in 2019. Cllr Kennedy said that Ridley Road has become a “victim of the carnival’s success” as it has been excluded from the route once more.
Pax Nindi returns as artistic director, and he will lead a parade that is expected to feature several popular carnival groups who have had to bide their time during the five-year hiatus.
A line up is underway as is work to create opportunities for young people and their families to get involved in summer workshops in the area, Hackney Council confirmed.
Residents will be able to make costumes, perform on stage, and volunteer on the day.
The Mayor of Hackney, Caroline Woodley, said: “I’m so happy that we’ve been able to bring Hackney’s family-friendly Carnival back to the borough’s streets this September.
“The return of Carnival is a chance for residents to come together to celebrate and showcase the creativity and talent that makes our diverse borough so special.
“For anybody who has yet to experience Hackney Carnival, now is your chance,” she added.
The carnival will take place on Sunday the 22nd of September.
