XL Bully shot dead after it attacked four people in a rampage close to a south London high street.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers encountered the rampaging dog. After exhausting other options, they made the decision to euthanize the animal. None of those injured required life-threatening treatment. But, all four were taken to hospital for injuries sustained during the attack.
The Metropolitan Police have not yet released details on the breed of the dog. But witnesses reported it to be an XL Bully.
XL Bullies are a controversial breed, a development of the American Bully. Concerns have been raised about their size and strength, particularly when they are not properly trained.
The incident has sparked a renewed debate on dog control measures in London.
Marsha de Cordova, MP for Battersea, has called for a review of dangerous dog legislation. In a statement she said: “Public safety must be our top priority,” “This incident is a stark reminder of the need for robust measures to protect our communities from dangerous dogs.”
The Met Police arrested two people, a 22-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, on suspicion of being the owner in charge of a dog dangerously out of control. Both are now in custody.
