Education Secretary Gillian Keegan addresses university leaders at 10 Downing Street in a meeting today to discuss the rise in anti-Semitic abuse on university campuses and disruption to students’ learning.

The  Secretary for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Michael Gove, and the communities secretary Tom Tugendhat are also expected to attend. The government has said they support an “open exchange of views in universities” but that this should not turn into “hate speech, harassment or incitement of violence”.

This is happening as more UK universities are joining the global movement of setting up Pro-Palestinian encampments. Students are setting up camps inside their university premises to protest the ongoing conflict in Gaza and show their support for Palestine. Bristol, Manchester, UCL and SOAS University are among the institutions that have joined the movement which started in the US.

Anti-Semitic incidents have risen across UK campuses since the start of the crisis in Gaza. Community Security Trust, a charity which aims to protect British Jews from antisemitism and related threats, have shared that anti-Jewish hate recorded by them has increased by 80%.

Over 20 Vice-Chancellors from UK universities are expected to attend the meeting with Gillian Keegan today.
