A woman who was fatally stabbed in Edgware on Thursday was attacked by a man attempting to rob her, a witness has claimed.

The Metropolitan Police were called to reports of a stabbing in Burnt Oak Broadway in Edgware at 11:50.

The victim, a 66-year old woman, was attended to by land and air ambulance officers. She was treated for stab injuries but died at the scene.

Jess Bloom was working at the hair salon opposite the scene of the crime. She told The Times that she witnessed a man attempt to take the victim’s handbag. “He pulled her into the road and stabbed her three times”, she says.

A 22-year old man was arrested on Thursday afternoon in the Colindale area and remains in custody.

Detective Superintendent Tony Bellis says the latest update is a “significant development in this investigation”. He urges people to “refrain from speculating about the circumstances while this work is ongoing.”

He added that “Local people will notice an increased police presence in the area in the coming days to provide reassurance.”

The Met Police are appealing for any information.
