The colours of the Northern Lights are dependent on gas and electrons in the atmosphere

The Northern Lights could be visible across the UK on Friday, the Met Office has said.

Clear spells are predicted across much of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Northern England and Wales.

The Met Office says if conditions are right, there’s a chance they may be visible further south.

Met Office Space Weather Manager Krista Hammond says the Aurora may also be visible on Saturday night – though in fewer parts of the country.

Ms Hammond said: “Multiple coronal mass ejections from the Sun are expected to reach Earth in the coming days bringing the potential for aurora visibility over the UK, particularly on Friday night.

While short nights at this time of year will limit the visibility window, if conditions are right there’s a good chance of sightings on Friday night.

Aurora visibility may persist through Saturday night, but as it stands this is likely to be less widespread than on Friday night with northern parts of the UK most likely to continue to have the best viewing potential.”
