The Metropolitan police charged three men under the National Security Act.

Three men have been charged under the National Security Act for assisting the Hong Kong intelligence service.

Chi Leung (Peter) Wai, 38, Matthew Trickett, 37, and Chung Biu Yuen, 63, have been charged with foreign interference, the Metropolitan Police said.

Commander Dominic Murphy, Head of the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command, said these developments are concerning but that the threat has been suppressed.

He also stressed that the operation is not connected to a recently reported Counter Terrorism Policing investigation linked to Russia.

The Metropolitan Police said that 11 people were detained as part of the investigation on the 1st of May, but the seven men and one woman were released before 10th May.

The Metropolitan Police said the Hong Kong investigation was a stand alone case and not related to a separate incident involving Russia.

Commander Murphy urged the public not to “speculate or comment further” as this case remains ongoing.
