Pubs one step closer to staying open late as proposal for later hours is passed by the Commons.

The Commons have cleared the way for hospitality venues to extend their opening hours for major national or local events.
Now that the proposal has been cleared in the Commons, it will be vetted in the House of Lords.
The Licensing Hours Extensions Bill was created by Labour MP, Emma Lewell- Buck and it aims to simplify the “costly, overly bureaucratic, time consuming and restrictive” parliamentary process for and opening hour extension.
Ms Lewell-Buck said there had been a “missed opportunity” when England’s Lionesses made the final in the 2023 World Cup in Australia.
She said that pub culture in England is appreciated nationwide:
“Love for our pubs is strong across all our constituencies. If there’s one thing guaranteed to unite us it’s sporting events. We tend to gather for those events in our local pubs because they are the beating heart of our communities.”
What about locals?
Although Conservative MP, Nickie Aitken, said she supported the bill, she raised concerns for local residents who live near venues that could stay open late.
Ms Aitken said, “it’s important not to forget that such extensions will see an increase in consumption of alcohol and therefore likely, as often is the case, sadly result in an increase in anti-social behaviour and disturbances for residents.”
However Ms Lewell-Buck said there “will be continued consultation with police and local authorities”.
