£4.5 million has been agreed for the redevelopment of the Falcon Road underpass at Clapham Junction.
MP for Battersea, Balham and Wandsworth Marsha de Cordova says the announcement is “great news” as it is something she has long campaigned for.
Wandsworth council’s leader Simon Hogg said “The gloomy and unwelcoming Falcon Road bridge cuts right through the middle of Clapham Junction’s thriving shopping, residential and transport area. Improvements here are long overdue.”
A report by councillors found that the current iteration of the underpass is “damp and dirty”. Residents say that it is a part of Clapham most in need of regeneration.
A recent survey of residents concluded that people thought it was dirty and unsafe. Women responding to the survey said they felt unsafe when using the underpass, particularly at night.
This underpass allows traffic to travel underneath the tracks at one of Europe’s busiest stations.
This project is the first part of a wider regeneration campaign for the Clapham Junction area. The Greater London Authority (GLA) says in its 2021 plan for regenerating London that the area could accommodate 2,500 extra jobs.
A competition was launched to redesign the underpass in August and the public are voting on the winning design on the 29th November. The final decision will be announced in December.
