A human rights charity have held a demonstration outside Buckingham Palace, protesting against the state visit of the Emir of Qatar.

The Peter Tatchell Foundation cited Qatar’s “appalling abuse of the human rights of women, LGBTs and migrant workers” as reasons for the protest.

Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Than, the head of the Qatari state, is in the UK for a 2-day state visit. The visit will include a meeting with Keir Starmer, King Charles and other members of the Royal Family.

Around 20 activists gathered outside Canada Gate, holding signs which said “Qatar State Visit is UK Shame”.

Protester Pliny told City News that he “did not think that the UK should be rolling out the red carpet for such a regime”.

Another protestor told City News that Qatar is a “sexist, homophobic dictatorship” and that they wanted to get their message heard”.

In response to criticism from human rights charities, Qatar’s international media office told Sky News that “we have consulted and coordinated extensively with global partners, including the ILO [International Labour Organisation], trade unions, NGOs, and the UK government to implement a modernised, fair, and effective labour system in line with the highest international standards.”

A spokesperson for Keir Starmer has also said that he hopes that the state visit will lead to “tangible benefits” for the UK on security and the economy.
