The London Assembly will today have its first chance to debate the Mayor’s budget, which proposes a £19 annual council tax rise for the average household.
It comes as London boroughs are announcing their own tax increases, with most expected to raise bills by five percent.
Last week, Sir Sadiq Khan told the London Assembly: “The last thing I want to do is increase council tax at a time when many household budgets are stretched. But keeping Londoners safe is my top priority as Mayor.”
“I’ll always use all the levers at my disposal to ensure the police in our city have the funding they require to tackle crime,” he added.
Just under £5 of the increase will go to the London Fire Brigade.
Alessandro Georgiou, Conservative Assembly Member for Cockfosters, said: “The Mayor’s budget has hit the ground running with an inflation-busting council tax rise, passing the cost of Labour’s disastrous budget onto Londoners.”
The London Assembly will have the final vote on the proposed increase in late February.

There are 12 London boroughs who have already announced increases of just under 5%. This includes Islington, Tower Hamlets and Greenwich.
Newham Council could hike their bills by 10%, if their application for “exceptional financial support” is approved by central government. Local councils can apply to increase their tax above 5% without holding a referendum if Whitehall agree.
Nearly 70% of the council’s budget is spent on care services for vulnerable children and adults.
“That’s why we are needing to apply for Exceptional Financial Support which allows us to sell our Council assets to fund day-to-day spending. This obviously isn’t sustainable and the whole local government sector needs multi-year fairer funding settlements based on local need.”

These council tax increases are subject to final approval by the respective local authorities.
