The Met Office has issues weather warnings for storms and strong winds over the next couple of days - but tornado experts have a warning for the capital
Weather forecasters have warned that London could be hit by a “tornado-style” event, with Storm Eowyn set to arrive in the UK today.
Meteorologists at the European Storm Forecast Experiment have said London is within the risk area for “tornado events”.
The researchers said: “Given rapid translation of thunderstorms, any tornado could be long-tracked and even a strong event cannot be ruled out.”
On Thursday morning, the Met Office issued a rare red weather alert, forecasting gusts of up to 100mph and “flying debris resulting in danger to life”.
Speaking to the Standard, the deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, Mike Silverstone, said: “Storm Eowyn is expected to bring very strong winds and widespread disruption on Friday.
“There are currently a number of weather warnings in place, with all parts of the UK covered by one warning at some point on Friday.”
