The Mayor of London has responded for the first time to reports that the Chancellor will soon announce her support for a third runway at Heathrow airport.
Speaking at the London Assembly, Sir Sadiq Khan said:
“The three big concerns that would need to be addressed if, in the hypothetical case, the speculation was to become a reality, is could a new runway be built that abides with carbon targets, concerns around noise pollution, and concerns around air pollution?
“Should that speculation become a reality, we’ll of course consider the merits of that case.
“But I’m quite clear, my views on the expansion of Heathrow by a new runway haven’t changed.”
Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero Ed Miliband, an opponent of Heathrow expansion in the past, has said today that he would not resign if the government backed the Heathrow expansion.
Mr Miliband said the Government’s position is for any aviation expansion to take place within the UK’s carbon budgets, which are part of plans to meet the country’s 2050 target of reducing emissions by 100% compared with 1990 levels.
Sir Sadiq has previously opposed any expansion at Heathrow on environmental grounds.
A spokesman has said: “The Mayor has a long-standing opposition to airport expansion around London – linked to the negative impact on air quality, noise and London’s ability to reach net zero by 2030.”
The Chancellor Rachel Reeves was quizzed yesterday by journalists about the reports that she was backing an expansion of Heathrow.
She declared: “Growth is the number one mission of this government, because growth underpins everything else, whether that is improving our schools and our hospitals, or indeed being able to get to net zero.”
