Wireless Festival announced this week that Drake will headline all three nights this summer, but he has been accused of not having a genuine love of the capital.
Wireless is celebrating its 20-year anniversary this year, and they’ve marked the occasion by booking a global superstar, Drake, to take centre stage throughout the weekend.
Drake will perform with PARTYNEXTDOOR, who he has just released a collaborative album with, on Friday, whilst the Saturday show is more of a mystery – titled ‘Drake and the mandem’. The Sunday show will feature special guests Burna Boy and Vybz Kartel.
City News spoke to Tracy Kawalik, a London-based music journalist about the announcement.
‘It’s interesting – I think everyone was waiting to see what Drake was going to do anyway [following his feud with Kendrick Lamar]. It’s an interesting choice, for sure. Because, I don’t think anyone’s going to say Drake is hot at the moment at all. It’s interesting especially to pick him headlining, and to be back in the UK for a festival that normally picks the hottest artists. I think it’s the coldest he’s ever been’
The Canadian has recently been embroiled in a rap beef with Kendrick Lamar
Drake has collaborated with several London rappers in the past. Notably, he made a guest appearance at a Section Boyz concert, as well as performing with Giggs at Reading Festival. However, Tracy isn’t convinced this love for London is genuine and instead believes it is a tool to advance his market.
He’s a clout vampire who has forever jumped on whatever scene, genre or crew is hyped at that moment, then positions it for his fans, like he’s giving them centre stage, when actually he’s leeching off their light. I think, okay fair enough he’s always waxed lyrical about about UK homegrown genres and UK rap. But he is for sure using those rappers and scenes to say relevant.
Wireless Festival this year lands on the weekend 11-13th July, and Drake will hope he is well received by the roughly 50,000-strong crowd that attend the festival each day.
City London News have approached Drake’s team for comment on this topic, but have not had a response.
