In an interview with Sky News this morning, the Home Secretary said he is working with Chancellor Phillip Hammond to find more money for the Metropolitan Police.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid said the police need more funding in order to fight increasing knife crime in London.

In an interview with Sky News this morning, the Home Secretary said he is working with Chancellor Phillip Hammond to find more money for the Metropolitan Police.

“I think resources is part of the issue, making sure that police as they deal with more of these complex situations that they have the resource they need.” He said.

This comes after a violent seven days in London after five fatal stabbings across the city.

Mayor Sadiq Khan, who has faced criticism for the violence, has pointed the finger at Westminster funding. “Cuts have consequences – and the Government need to wake up and properly fund our police now.”

Pressure is growing to increase police resources after years of austerity that have seen cuts of 20,000 police officers.

Mr Javid says he’s determined to give police the resources and the powers they need to fight the problem. He remains confident that the Chancellor will release funds before the end of the year.

More than 250 people have been died from knife crimes in the UK so far this year.
