The London Fire Brigade (LFB) quickly confirmed that a section of the roof was "completely destroyed".

The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that a fire at Forest Green police station in Newham is now “under control.”

Alerts were first raised on Wednesday afternoon at around 16:00 GMT, after the third floor of the building had caught fire.

The building was evacuated of its around 60 people and nobody is reported to have been injured. The cause of the fire is not currently being treated as suspicious.

Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne, the London Fire Brigade’s (LFB) incident commander, said: “This was a challenging incident for firefighters as the fire was located in the roof of the police station. Crews made extensive use of our 32 metre and 64 metre ladders to attack the fire from above, and our drone team was deployed to provided us with a view of the scene as we responded.”

The LFB told locals to avoid the area in anticipation that crews would respond to the incident into the night. They later confirmed just before midnight that while the fire was “under control…crews will now remain on the scene into the night”.

Minimal community impact

The police reassured residents that the fire did not impact policing response in the area.

In a statement, Kyle Gordon of the Metropolitan Police, said that staff will be given the support they require over the coming days due to the impact this has on their work.

In a press conference, Acting Commander Dan Card began by thanking the London Fire Brigade for their “swift response….and huge efforts to control the blaze”.

The LFB will carry out an investigation into the cause of the fire, which they say may be longer than usual due to the “scale and nature of the incident”.
