Transport for London has reopened applications for Oyster cards on a limited basis as part of a phased reintroduction of normal services.

This comes after the company was targeted by a cyber-attack in September which prompted it to close down most of its online services to limit the damage caused by the attack.

Applications for the 18+ student Oyster reopened on Monday, which gives holders a 30 per cent discount on the cost of an adult Travelcard and bus pass.

Around 5,000 customers were contacted by the company to inform them that personal details, such as bank account numbers and sort codes, could have been seen by hackers.

TfL say that they intend to refund customers who spent more than their usual travel costs over the two months that services were down.

Postgraduate student Alice Padgett expresses her relief at the return of Oyster cards, saying that ‘it feels like I’ve been haemorrhaging money over the last few months with no help from TfL’.

Those who are entitled to apply for the card include students living in a London borough during term time and are enrolled in a school, college or university registered on the TfL scheme.

Throughout November, applications will also reopen for the 60+ Oyster card, the 5-10, 11-15 and 16+ Zip photocards. Expired 5-10 and 11-15 photocards will still be accepted until the 31 December.

Deputy Mayor for Transport, Seb Dance, said “TfL has been working incredibly hard around the clock to restore the services which had to be temporarily taken offline while it responded to a highly sophisticated cyber attack. The Mayor and I commend TfL on its response, which has kept London moving and avoided the consequences of the attack being even worse.

“We’re really pleased TfL has now started accepting Oyster photocard applications for several concessions, including 18+ Student and 18 – 25 Care Leavers, and are assured work is ongoing to ensure that other photocard applications are opened as quickly as possible in the coming weeks.”
