Environmental campaigners have welcomed Sadiq Khan’s decision to fund eco initiatives in London’s schools.
In the Greener Schools initiative, the Mayor of London has promised £2 million to help schools reduce their carbon emissions and save on their energy bills. The initiative forms part of Khan’s plans to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.
Alex Green, director of the Let’s Go Zero campaign at Ashdown Climate Solutions, has welcomed the funding, saying every penny will be put to good use. She says initial projects like these are ‘key’ to finding foolproof climate solutions. She adds that additional funding in schools is essential if they are expected to be more energy efficient.
The scheme will ’empower boroughs’
Under the scheme, boroughs will be able to apply for £100,000 of council money per school. Multi-academy trusts are not eligible. Ms Green says the application process will “empower boroughs” to improve their local schools.
City Hall recommends that the funding be used to install devices that reduce the financial pressures of energy bills, such as solar panels, heat pumps or further insulation.
Ms Green is optimistic that the funding will help address the disparity in eco initiatives in London’s schools. She says that some institutions are already energy efficient, but others lag significantly behind.
In a speech announcing the policy earlier this week, Khan said he hoped similar funding schemes would be rolled out nationwide.
He said that schools saving money on their utility bills would mean more funding for their education.
