Londoners gathered this week in Trafalgar Square to celebrate Team GB’s success in Rio this summer.

After a long summer away from home the athletes could finally bask in their exceptional glory after an extraordinary performance. The 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games resulted in Team GB’s greatest medal haul in a century.

Perhaps one reason for this is UK Sport has invested around £274million in Olympic sports over the past four years.

Local sports clubs of North London have benefitted from this funding boost. A representative of Finsbury Park RFC told us that interest in rugby sevens have grown substantially since the sport made its premier appearance in Rio 2016.

With this uptake in interest and funding, all eyes are on the next generation of athletes heading to Tokyo in 2020.
