What do you get when you combine exercise with gardening and cemeteries? The GoodGym – an enthusiastic group of runners who ‘combine getting fit with doing good’.
This usually means helping housebound and vulnerable Londoners, but tonight, in Hackney’s ‘Abney Park Takeover’, the GoodGym are tackling a wider community project and tidying up one of London’s ‘Magnificent Seven’ Cemeteries.
In recent years, although a haven for wildlife, Abney Park has become increasingly overgrown.
However, the GoodGym will open the Takeover with a 3k run from E5 Bakehouse to Abney Park and spend 40 minutes ‘dominating’ gardening tasks before running the 3k back.
The GoodGym’s work has seen them win the Mayor of London’s Award for Outstanding Contribution for improving the lives of Londoners 2014, Sports Industry Awards 2016 and the Running Awards 2016 – to name but a few.
