The Argentine, who has yet to win a trophy during his managerial career, also said that despite Tottenham’s progression under his tenure, they have to “move to the next level, and that is winning things”.
A stunning team performance against the defending European champions certainly announced Spurs’ arrival on the world stage.
Dele Alli, on his first start in this season’s Champions League, scored twice and was a constant menace throughout. Harry Kane, whilst not scoring, demonstrated his peerless physical play, shrugging off World Cup-winning defender Sergio Ramos numerous times throughout the match.
In theory, the goal of winning silverware seems feasible – a team which is brimming with talent and a desire to earn the club’s first trophy since 2008, coupled with outstanding talents such as the aforementioned Harry Kane, should amount to a trophy-laden era for the club.
In practice, however, there remain difficulties in overcoming this final hurdle. Manchester City are Tottenham’s main rivals for the Premier League title this season, and are in ominous form.
Furthermore, there is also the very real danger that last night’s individual performances from the likes of Kane, Alli and Eriksen to name but three, could attract potential suitors – indeed, Real Madrid themselves have been rumoured to be preparing a world-record bid for Harry Kane next summer.
Whether or not Tottenham can keep their team in tact is another issue altogether – all they can do for now is keep on winning games in the manner of yesterday’s performance, and the rest will surely follow.
