Olivier Giroud embraces Mesut Özil after scoring against Huddersfield on Wednesday.

Giroud was speaking at a press conference following Arsenal’s 5-0 win over Huddersfield last night.

Özil was on top form for the Gunners, providing two assists in the space of 29 seconds. He also added to the score line and picked up his second man of the match award in a row, after his performance against Tottenham.

There is uncertainty about Özil’s future, as his contract runs out at the end of the season. He has previously been linked with a move to Manchester United and Barcelona, with some saying that he might even leave the club during the January transfer window.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says that both Özil and Alexis Sanchez, who has also been connected with a move away from the Emirates, will stay until the end of this Premier League campaign, unless “something unbelievable” happens.

Olivier Giroud scored twice off the bench on Wednesday, and he was keen to back his teammate, saying: “Yes, of course. He is a top player and we need him.

“He makes the best choice most of the time. He knows when he has to pass the ball or to shoot and when you are in a good position you always think he thinks assist before scoring, even if he scored tonight. I am very happy for him. He is our playmaker and is a key player.”

But despite this praise from his teammates, Özil has still been criticised for his apparent lack of consistency.

When questioned by journalists about whether Özil deserved such negative attention, Giroud said: “You cannot be at the top level all the time. Sometimes people expect the best from you every single game because you are a top player.

“I can understand that. But we never had any doubts about his quality, that is for sure.”

Giroud came on at half time during the game, replacing Arsenal’s record breaking summer signing Alexandre Lacazette.

Lacazette has picked up a groin injury and is expected to miss Saturday’s fixture with Manchester United.
